Health Benefits of Cabbage

There’s a lot of hype surrounding  superfoods these days, and for good reason. But quite often, these superfoods are not local and come from distant places or are very expensive and are not as accessible. There are just as many easily-accessible, affordable and nutrient-dense foods that perhaps don’t get the media attention that they deserve.

I want to introduce you to a superfood that’s hiding in the shadows of the more marketed superfoods. Cabbage. I know, it’s not sexy, it might even make you think of dear Russian Grandmothers – but it’s powerful.

Yes, cabbage is indeed a superfood – a cancer fighting superfood. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), of cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States and the third most common cancer in men and in women. The good news is that cabbage can help. Low rates of colon cancer have been found in populations who consume lots of cabbage. Cabbage contains compounds called indoles. These compounds have been shown to enhance enzyme systems that detoxify cancer-causing substances.

We live in quite the chemical laden environment these days. Cabbage juice can be incorporated into any juice fast or detox as it can increase the rate at which the body disposes of toxic drugs and carcinogens and has an anti-mutagenic effect on tumors caused by chemicals as well.[1 This superfood is also:

  • Immune building
  • Anti-bacterial
  • High in antioxidants
  • Ant-septic
  • Anti-ulcer
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • High in vitamin C
  • High in beta-carotene
  • High in folic acid

Like all raw foods, cabbage is loaded with enzymes to help the overall function of your body and your digestive system. It is also one of only 4 vegetables that are high in vitamin E. It’s been used as a tonic to restore strength and has been successfully used by diabetics to reduce blood sugar. Due to it’s anti-inflammatory properties it has been proven very effective for healing and treating ulcers.
