Everyone on the planet has one thing in common – we all have tough days. You know those days, right? When you just don’t feel that you have what it takes to keep going, to summon up the strength to face what needs to be faced. You can help yourself get over the hurdle by trying some, or all, of these suggestions.
1. Focus On What Is Working
I know, sometimes it feels that nothing is going your way. Change your focus by noticing one thing that is going well. It could be anything. Some ideas are: the sun is shining, I am breathing easily, a tasty smoothie made with fresh fruit, a smile on a child’s face. Make your own list; read, and re-read.
2. Get Outside
Put on your walking shoes and enjoy some time away from what is troubling you. Before you start on your walk, make a pledge to not think about your struggles and set a time, after your walk, when you will. While on your walk, if your problems come to mind, remind yourself that you are going for a problem-free walk and you will think about it later.
3. Stay away from Debbie or Doug Downer
Negative people are a challenge at the best of times, and especially when you are going through a touch time. Have the positive people in your life on speed dial and tap into their positivity when you need to. If you don’t feel like you have someone close to you who you can call, turn to inspirational teachers. One of my favorites teachers to listen to when the going is getting tough is Pema Chödrön. Her audio series called Getting Unstuck has been a lifesaver for me.
4. Choose a Positive Mantra
This is one of my favorite strategies. Choose a saying, like “everything works out for me” or “I have everything I need” and repeat it whenever your mind is flooded with negative thoughts. You don’t have to believe it, for it to work; just saying it will shift you away from your negative thinking. Another way to get a daily mantra is to sign up for a daily positive quote. Visit our Positive Attitude Quotes Facebook page where over 1 million people receive daily inspiration from us.
5. Do Your Best to Stay Healthy
Taking care of yourself during tough times is so important. Stressful times increase your changes of getting ill. While you might be tempted to fill up on junk food – don’t do it! It’s just one more negative thing you will have to deal with. Focus on making healthy recipes. Putting healthy food into your body will protect you against illness – both physical and mental.
While it is good to have strategies like the ones listed above to help you get through tough times, sometimes you are challenged beyond what you think you can handle. So reach out and ask for help. Asking for help is a true sign of courage. It may be a trusted, non-judgmental friend or a counselor. Sometimes a single session can provide the support you need when times are tough.
Be happy, be well,
