Lemon water is a great way to start off the day. I either have a fresh coconut, or filtered water with a squeeze of lemon juice in it – at room temperature. This is one of the simplest and most effective and cheapest ways to start living a healthier lifestyle. The first thing I recommend to clients is to start drinking more water!
As we sleep we tend to dehydrate our bodies and need to replenish this loss first thing in the morning. Our bodies are about 70% water! Isn’t that incredible? We need about 2 liters of filtered water every single day just to maintain basic functioning. No wonder there’s so many processes in the body that require proper hydration – including the absorption of minerals and vitamins, brain function, regulating metabolism, cell growth, heart function, weight control, digestion, regulation of elimination, and many more. Water can also help to reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Our bodies simply cannot function properly if they are not properly hydrated.
Also keep in mind that the more fruits and vegetables you consume, the more water you will be drinking.
Did you know that lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue!? If you’re experiencing headaches you can usually remedy it with a few glasses of water! Next time you might be able to skip out on taking medication that are not actually addressing the root of the problem. And water is a cheaper, safer and a healthier remedy too!
Why lemon water? I like to add lemon to my water in the morning time because it helps kick start my digestion, supports optimal functioning of my liver and flushes my system for morning elimination. Lemon’s are also very alkalizing for the body (despite tasting sour, it’s alkaline for the body) and will help balance body pH.
Lemons are also high in vitamin C, which can help boost your immune system and reduce stress. They are also high in potassium, which stimulates brain function helping you start your day with a calm and clear mind.
If you can, buy organic lemons to squeeze fresh in the morning. Store-bought lemon juice usually has some sort of preservative to allow it to keep stable on the shelves. Buying organic is also important because citrus is usually heavily sprayed and I like to drop the rind in my water too.
Why the emphasis on room temperature water? Cold water is a shock to the body and can
shut (update) slow down your digestion, not stimulate it. According to Susan E. Brown, PhD, cold foods and beverages slow down the rate of digestion because they must be “heated up” before proper digestion can take place. I notice that I often get a sore stomach from cold water and even eating very cold smoothies and vegan ice-creams.
This morning routine is a nutritious and energizing choice to start your day, try implementing this instead of coffee and see how you feel.
